[17] Kuri Kondrak

We’re a long-time fan of Seattle selector Kuri Kondrak, whose range and taste we came to appreciate with frequent guest mixes for WNUR’s “Sonic Sunset” program (In fact some of those 2006 mixes still stand tall among our favorite ever). We know It may seem almost de rigueur these days for DJ’s to pull a lot of “cross-genre” material, but we’ve always been damned impressed with Kuri being able to move from Italo to Hip Hop to Techno without a hitch, the kind of confidence you only get with a deep record collection. Kuri is the former music editor at Resonance Magazine (RIP) and has played up and down the West Coast. This is a great mix as always, Techno-focused with choice cuts from the 90’s through to hot off-the-press releases.

[16] Epistrophe Smith

Starting off the New Year with a great live hardware set from Bristol, UK’s Epistrophe Smith! A jazz double-bassist by trade, Smith brings a breadth and depth of knowledge to his work we can really appreciate. Very happy to have him record a live set for our traveling musical spaceship.

"Inspired by the tape splicing masterpieces Teo Macero successfully achieved with Miles Davis’ work (albums such as In A Silent Way.) The aim for these live sets is to explore real time tape slicing, intricately melding jazz and techno using a granular sampler. The approach offers glimpses of jittering samples taken from previous work. The idea is to keep sculpting the boundaries of jazz and techno until the two worlds finally feel truly comfortable together. 

The sets are all fully improvised, with only an initial idea to work from. There is no editing post production except for a little mastering simply used to allow the music to sit comfortably alongside other work. 

The journey will be an interesting one, stay locked and we’ll see where it goes."

Epistrophe has been busy, with production on Soundcog Records, Traum Schalplatten, and Aila Records. Lots of great material here, and he’s got two upcoming releases early this year, so check out his catalog and stay tuned!

We were both delighted and honored to be featured on Jacktone Radio, which aired this week past. [08] Phonaut

Returning to the surface after last episode's darker Techno shenanigans, we plot a course straight for the upper atmosphere and infinite space beyond with Chicago's Phonaut.  He's delivered rich ambient selections in a mix entitled "Mood Triangulations" to take you to all the right places, and we think you'll enjoy the trip as much as we have.  Phonaut has been focusing on a variety of ambient styles of late, crossing from psychadelic to beat-driven, to clock-drone, etc, and this mix showcases this variety of sounds within the genre.

Along with his own production work, international performances and audio installation work, Phonaut has also been a frequent selector on Chicago's WNUR.  You can find out more, including archived performances and additional mixes at his website.

From the Artist: ...."This mix is an agglomeration of thoughts, textures, influences, rhythms, sounds and aspirations. Chicago by far is the biggest inspiration on my DJing: selection-wise, programming-wise, skill-wise. I've been a collage artist since high school and with my recent transition to vinyl, the technique really lends itself to my mixing. I got into electronic music as a dancer, and I'm now expanding past the four on the floor pattern I've focused on for many years. I'm rediscovering a true love of music and in this mix I'm combining that with sounds that bridge the gaps or make different pieces fit. This mix is an homage to people & friends who have helped me along the way, artists who are shaping my path, and the music that guides me. It is only the beginning of my journey beyond the dancefloor."

[01] Welcome Aboard

Welcome to the show!

For our initial transmission we are casting a wide net, previewing the variety and range of sounds we are interested in showcasing in more depth down the line.   You can expect future episodes to focus more tightly on specific themes; genres, labels, or important musicians we feel worth sharing.   But to start, a little something for a variety of tastes!

...In the future we might do a whole show on early 90's Prescription Records, or WBMX radio sounds from Chicago, or Amsterdam's Delsin. There is a pretty good chance you'll get an episode showcasing Basic Channel and their contemporary affiliates, or 100 minutes of pain from Hospital Productions... or 100 minutes of ambient bliss.

In any case we're going broad but not (too) deep to start, and will plunge the depths moving forward with our own sets and our guests'.   Thanks for joining us as we set off on this trip.
